Medical Director

Dr. Hosseini is an internist and fellowship-trained, board-certified occupational and environmental medicine specialist. He serves as Medical Director of the Occupational & Environmental Clinical Center (OECC) at SUNY Upstate Medical University and as Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine.

His clinical practice focuses primarily on occupational lung disease, including the evaluation of acute and chronic respiratory conditions in which workplace or environmental exposures are suspected to contribute to disease onset or progression. He also cares for patients with complex inhalational and chemical exposures and complicated workers’ compensation cases, with particular emphasis on the recognition and management of occupational illness, a domain that is often underdiagnosed, clinically intricate, and consequential for long-term health. His approach is grounded in rigorous exposure assessment, evidence-based evaluation, and individualized strategies for safe and sustainable return to work.

Dr. Hosseini recognizes that an occupational illness can be life-changing, affecting not only health but livelihood, identity, and family, and that the path to a clear diagnosis and appropriate care can itself be long and demanding. He takes the time to listen, to understand the full story behind each patient’s symptoms and work history, and to help patients understand their condition and the options available to them.

Patients are referred to Dr. Hosseini for evaluation of symptoms that may have a workplace or environmental cause, conditions that appear to have been worsened by occupational exposure, diagnoses that do not fully account for the clinical picture, and decisions about safe return to work. Each evaluation begins with a detailed occupational and environmental history and integrates prior medical records, exposure data, and targeted diagnostic testing into a comprehensive assessment, with the goal of providing the clearest clinical determination the available evidence supports and a coherent plan for ongoing management in every case.

Dr. Hosseini’s research interests include healthcare utilization and the health effects of military inhalational exposures. His work has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including JAMA Network Open, European Heart Journal, Journal of the American Heart Association, and JACC: Clinical Electrophysiology. He has presented at international conferences and delivered continuing medical education courses to practicing occupational and environmental medicine physicians.

As faculty, Dr. Hosseini teaches medical students and MPH students in occupational and environmental medicine and contributes to the training of the next generation of physicians in the field.

Dr. Hosseini received his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2013. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, followed by his residency in Internal Medicine and his fellowship in Occupational and Environmental Medicine at Yale School of Medicine.
